Set Mine Points

This time, I would like to summarize the key points of Set Mine.

◆Set Mine Points◆

Now let’s look at some points to consider when set-mining.

● Position
First, let’s talk about position.
Even if your set-mine is successful and you manage to make a set, it’s difficult to make a large profit out of position.
Conversely, if you have a position, the implied odds will be higher, and so will the expected value of your set-mine.
Keep in mind that there is a big difference in implied odds when set-mining on the BTN and SB.

Another important factor is how many players are still left to act after you.
For example, if the underdog at a nine-player table open-raises and the underdog+1 player sets and mines, you’ll need a pair hand with a strength of around 99 or 88.
This is because there are seven players left who haven’t acted yet, and a three-bet or more action is expected.
However, when set-mining on the BTN, you only need two players left, and considering that you’re definitely IP, you’ll likely be able to play with a hand with a strength of around 55+.
Furthermore, if the table tends to be passive, you’ll be able to set-mine with a wider range.

●3-bet size
When you’re faced with a 3-bet after an open-raise and set-mine, the 3-bet size and your position are important factors. If the
3-bet size is small, you’ll set-mine with many pairs, while if the 3-bet size is large, you’ll set-mine with higher pairs.
This is due to the difference in calling odds, but one thing to note is that middle-ranked or higher pairs are relatively easy to play even if they don’t get a set.
With a low pocket pair, you’ll almost always give up the pot if you don’t get a set.

Position is strongly related to implied odds and also affects how you play if you don’t get a set.
When set-mining against a 3-bet, you should play with the size and position in mind.

Opponent tendencies:
Opponents who are suitable for 3-betting set-mine tend to have a tight 3-betting range or are extremely aggressive. The tighter
the 3-betting range, the higher the implied odds tend to be, and when you make a set against such an opponent, there is a high probability that you will be able to take all of their stacks.

Opponents who are extremely aggressive and can be expected to double- or triple-barrel bluff can also be said to have high implied odds. However
, if your opponent only has a high 3-bet rate, their range is weak and you cannot expect implied odds.

Effective Stack Size
An important factor when set-mining is effective stack size.
If your effective stack is small, especially when 3-betting, your implied odds will also be small, making it impossible to set-mine profitably.

For example, if you have a 50BB effective stack and are 3-bet 10BB, even if you call, the implied odds will be small, making post-flop play difficult.
Therefore, a 4-bet all-in is an effective tactic in this case.
Against an opponent with a balanced 3-betting range or a range with a high 3-betting rate, even a low pocket pair will give you decent equity, and you will also have plenty of fold equity.
And most importantly, the play is simple and reduces the chance of mistakes.
This play is even more effective when playing OOP.
