About Capped Range

This time I would like to summarize the Capped Range.

◆Capped Range◆

A capped range is a range with a limited upper limit, which means that it
contains very few or no strong hands such as overpairs, two pairs, sets, straights, or flushes.

For example, the MP raises in and only the BB calls, resulting in a HU.
The flop :jd: :9s: :4d: comes and the BB checks, and the MP also checks.
In this case, the MP can basically CB with a hand of top pair or better for value and a semi-bluff with a draw.
However, because the MP has checked, those strong value hands and draw hands will no longer be in their range, which will cap their range and weaken it.
Furthermore, if a card that completes a draw comes down on the turn, they will be unable or find it difficult to assert those strong hands, making it easier for the BB to attack on the turn and beyond.

◆Make good use of the Capped Range◆

So let’s look at an example here.

◇HJ open-raises, SB and BB (   ) call, 3-way

●The flop is    a check-around.
The original raiser, Head and Jack, checked, capping Head and Jack’s range.
Strong hands within Head and Jack’s range are now significantly fewer, and weak hands below A are more likely.

●  On the turn, SB and BB check, and in response to HJ’s bet, SB folds, BB check-raises, and HJ calls
. HJ’s betting range is likely to be many of the marginal ranges mentioned above.
Of course, hands like a slow-played QJ on the flop, a flop set, a set on the turn, or A5s are also possible, but these are rare combinations, and since there was no CB in a 3-way pot, it seems more likely to be some other marginal hand.

Against such a range, the BB is semi-bluffing with a flush draw.
The BB’s value check-raise range is something like QJ, 55, AT, A5, K5, KT, which balances out the semi-bluff range.

The river is a 6,  and the BB overbet.
The river is a lag, and the BB’s flush draw is not completed, but the BB has a range advantage, and the head and head’s range is capped, so an overbet bluff is an effective tactic here, putting a lot of pressure on the head and head’s capped range.

◆Protect the Capped Range◆

To maintain the Capped Range, you need to incorporate some of your strong hands and draws into your checking range.
A strong checking range on the flop will be more effective, especially against aggressive players who make a lot of probe bets.
By incorporating some strong draws into your Capped Range, it will be easier to play cards that complete your draw on the turn.

A strategy like this that balances your range is effective against skilled players who care about your range,
but against players who don’t care about your range, a strategy that exploits your range is more effective than a balanced one.
